James Blagg was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, on the 17th June 1882, and enlisted at Valcartier Camp, Quebec, Canada, 25th September 1914, giving his next of kin as his aunt, Mrs. Lucy Harrison, of Belper Lane, Belper, Derbyshire. He stated his occupation as a farrier. He was 5 feet 10 inches tall, dark complexion, blue eyes and black hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had two vaccination marks on his upper left arm and a scar on his right shin.
